Christopher Columbus was born before 31 October, 1451 in Genoa, Italy. He is Maritime explorer, navigator and colonizer. He had completed 4 voyages across the Atlantic Ocean that found America continent. In the beginning of Spain colonization of the New World, his voyages emerged him to establish permanent settlements on the island of Hispaniola. The expansion of Western Imperialism and economic competition, European kingdoms explored the treasures through the foundation of the trade route and colonies. Columbus tried to reach East Indies by navigating to the west. Finally he decided to receive encouragement from the King of Spain, who saw an opportunities to beat the competitors for gainful spice trade with Asia.
The first voyage in 1492, he attended to reach Japan but he landed in Bahamas instead. He named “San Salvador” which is in the Bahamas; the natives called Guanahani. The Native people that he confronted were peaceful and friendly. He noticed their gold ear ornaments. He took some the Arawak prisoners who can help and lead him to the source of gold.
The second voyage, he explored to Lesser Antiles which includes Montserrat, Antigua, Redonda, Nevis, Saint Kitts, Saint Eustatius, Saba, Saint Martin and Saint Croix. He aimed to the chain of the Virgin islands. He signed as “Islands of Saint Ursula and the 11,000 Virgins”. He likewise named of Virgin of Gorda, Tortola and Peter Island. Then, He drops in the Greater Antiles which is an island group, containing the Cayman Island, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the island of Cuba, in the Caribbean Sea.
He continued to Caribbean coast of Venezuela as well as the Central America. He was not the first European that visited in America, but he is the first one who contacted with Americans, initiated an era of European exploration, triumph and colonization that prolonged for several centuries. They had an immense effect of the historical development of the modern Western world. Columbus himself saw his achievement initially in the prosperity of spreading religion.
Base on his lifestyle, the doctor diagnose that he went down with Reiter’s Syndrome, rather than his first belief, he thought that suffered from Gout. He thought like that because of the similar symptoms. He might get the poison from food, during his journey, which is poor sanitation and improper food preparation. He was died in May 20, 1506 in Valladolid, Crown of Castile (in the present day is Spain).
